Outstandingly, Ormiston College was named the Top School in Queensland in the 2022 Australian Geography Competition and ranked in the Top 10 Schools Australia-wide. A special congratulations goes to Anneke Steyl in the Year 8 division of the competition who was placed in the top 1% of the country.

The President of the Royal Geography Society of Queensland, John Tasker, congratulated the Ormiston College staff and students at the Annual Conference of the Geography Teachers Association of Queensland, held on the Gold Coast.

Ian Burgess, Head of Department – Humanities, stated “I am immensely proud of these results as they serve as a fitting reward for the significant amount of work that staff have put in to developing generic higher order thinking skills plus subject specific skills from Year 7 up, in both Geography and History. Whilst the students receive the awards, it would be remiss of me not to acknowledge the teachers' hard work in preparing them for this competition and more broadly challenging them with a rigorous and engaging curriculum. I am blessed to work with such a dedicated team of teachers from Years 7 to 12 and am fortunate indeed to have two quality specialist Geographers in Roz Minnikin and Lessa Gore-Brown.

Also announced were special scholarship recipients who received funding to attend the Annual Geography Teachers of Australia National Conference in Hobart. Only five teachers in the state receive this funding, one of the five being our own Roslyn Minnikin. This is an excellent acknowledgement of her passion and dedication to the subject, the quality of her work, and the support she offers to Humanities Staff in her area of expertise.

Congratulations to our Geography students and staff on these incredible achievements.
