Wednesday, 13 October, was certainly a proud night of nights for all concerned. Whilst Speech Night is primarily recognised for academic and co-curricular achievements, plus leadership and other scholarly attributes, three other characteristic certainly stood out during the evening. One being the humour of our Headmaster, Brett Webster; the sincerity in the messages presented in two speeches made by our 2021 College Captains, Sam Dench and Charlotte Lane; plus, the great talent that radiates within our student performers, inspired by our Dean of Music, Jason Taggart.
The event took on the format of previous years, with pre-entertainment of various music groups and the processional of the official staff party, followed by an energetic, colourful presentation of some favourite numbers from this year’s musical ‘Grease’. Little did we realise that the following item on the program, that being the Headmaster’s Address, would have that as an amusing and pleasurable twist to its ending.
Brett Webster spoke of the outstanding determination and spirit that has allowed Ormiston College students to achieve the amazing results that we were witnessing. He also spoke of the unconditional commitment and tireless energy of our teaching staff, plus the overwhelming support of our parent body. He then made reference to several quips and witticisms relevant to Grease, to which the performance group responded, completely changing the mood of his speech, much to the delight of the audience. He finally broke off into a mini-croon with rapturous results from the audience and students. A wonderful moment of true school spirit and togetherness. Certainly, a speech not to be forgotten.
The presentation of Academic Awards was made to Junior School, Middle School and Senior School. There was also a myriad of Special Awards and Prizes, Merit Medallions, plus many co-curricular awards.
It is always pleasurable to see students who are about to complete their Junior School years and have the opportunity to applaud them for their efforts as they are about to enter Secondary School. It is also quite moving to see our Year 12 students line up behind them, knowing that they are soon to become graduates and alumni of this great College. Two groups, both about to take on new steps to their future life.
Our College Captains, Charlotte Lane and Sam Dench, made very powerful, stirring speeches. Both gave sincere messages to the students about entering Secondary School, passing-on experiences that had meaning to them during their years at OC.
Towards the end of the program, Member of the Board of Directors, Professor Peter Little, AM, gave an official Vote of Thanks.
It was a very special Speech Night that will be fondly remembered by many students.
