On Friday, 7 February, the student body from Year 1 through to Year 12, together with the College Executive, staff and special guests, assembled in the Somerset Sports Centre to witness the Prefects Investiture and the Year 6 Student Leaders Induction. Among the special guests was the Honourable Amanda Stoker, member for Oodgeroo, Wendy Boglary, local Division 1 Councillor, Mr John Miller, Ormiston College Chairman of the Board, and the parents of the student recipients.

The event was opened by Headmaster, Mr Michael Hornby, who spoke about the importance of leadership and the courage to move forward when we fail. He emphasised that all students across the College have the opportunity to take on a leadership capacity, stating, “Every student here at Ormiston College is a leader, whether it's on the sporting field, on the stage, in the classroom or in our community. It is through living the Ormiston College values of compassion, integrity, respect, responsibility and service that we will ensure we have a great 2025.”

Following this, Mr Miller, officially presented the 2025 College Captains, Jessica Schull and Tasman Wright, and the 11 assisting Prefects with their badges.

After their official induction, the College Captains took to the podium to address the assembly. Jessica commenced her address by expressing her gratitude to the College community for the opportunity to serve as a College Captain and reflected on the power of kindness in leadership. “We all have the power to influence our lives and the lives of those around us,” she shared. “It’s about the small things – helping out a friend, standing up for others, even just starting a conversation with someone new.”

Tasman followed, reflecting on the privilege of serving as College Captain and encouraged students to take full advantage of everything on offer at Ormiston College. Referring to the changes that have occurred at the College this year, he went on to say, “In 2025 we want to embrace change and let this be a time of transformation - a time where we embrace everything that makes Ormiston College great and use it as a scaffold to lift us into the future.”

The Head of Junior School and Deputy Head of College, Mrs Lee Catterall, then invited the Year 6 Student Leaders to the stage to receive their badges from Mr Miller.

The audience also had the opportunity to enjoy musical performances presented by the Symphony Strings ensemble as well as a wonderful rendition of “Rise Up” performed by the Bellas and Redbacks.

At the conclusion of the assembly, parents of inductees and special guests were invited to join the Headmaster and Chairman of the Board in the Hall of Fame for morning tea where they had the opportunity to celebrate the newly inducted leaders.

We congratulate the students and wish them well as they step up to take on these leadership roles, committing to serve the College and shaping the year ahead for the better, for everyone, at Ormiston College.
