On Tuesday 21 February, our Year 10 Geographers had a great time experiencing the farm and factory tour at Maleny Dairies. Here they witnessed the entire process of milk production, from milking, to pasteurising and bottling - all on site.
The adoption of this vertical integration approach and the dairy’s proactivity to support other local struggling dairies following the 'supermarket milk wars', saw Maleny Dairies becoming a milk purchaser, processor and distributer, ensuring the longevity of its own farm, as well as at least 14 other local dairy farms.
Not only is its integration of technologies to enhance efficiencies and maximise output commendable, as Queensland’s first carbon-positive dairy, Maleny Dairies impressed the students with the emphasis placed on creating an environmentally and economically sustainable business which actively supported local farming families and business.
Highlights included bottle feeding the calves and taste testing the Maleny Dairies products. The milk bar was a great hit for lunch too!
