Last term, Ormiston College's Hearts and Hands chose to support children in foster care in our community by creating ‘Backpacks of Care’. With over 10,000 children in care in Queensland, this was indeed a worthy initiative.

Wellbeing classes from Years 7 to 12 were asked to create and donate five backpacks per class, containing essentials and comforting items such as warm blankets, reading books, stuffed toys, colouring pens, snacks, and toiletries. Hearts and Hands worked out that if every class provided the five bags, they would have 165 bags to donate.

The response from the OC community was wonderful. Over 200 backpacks were generously donated.

Chaplain Stewart Harris from Churches of Christ - Children, Youth and Families accepted the donation at an assembly this term. In response to the donation, the non-profit organisation said, “What an incredible, selfless group of young people - we are overwhelmed and could not be more grateful”.

Each backpack has now been allocated a home and proven extremely useful to the recipients, who often did not have belongings with them when arriving in care. Thank you to everyone involved for your contributions to this meaningful initiative.
