On Wednesday 31 July, Ormiston College hosted acclaimed author Sarah Armstrong, much to the excitement of our Years 4 to 6 students. Sarah, a highly awarded radio journalist and author, has turned her creative talents toward writing novels for children.

The visit was a highlight for our students particularly as they have been exploring excerpts from Sarah’s novel, Big Magic, during Library and Literacy lessons. The story has already captured the imaginations of our young readers making Sarah’s visit even more special.

The Year 4 students had the opportunity to participate in writer’s workshops led by Sarah. These sessions were a hit as students dove into engaging writing activities picking up valuable tips and tricks directly from a professional author. Sarah was impressed with the creativity she encountered, remarking, “The school’s culture of reading and writing and storytelling remains perfectly vibrant as I discovered today. In the writing workshops I taught, the kids blew me away with their incredible story ideas.”

Years 5 and 6 students attended an interactive presentation in the Lingo Lin Performing Arts Theatre with Sarah. She not only inspired them with her experiences but also answered their many questions about the writing process. The chance to interact with a real-life author was a memorable experience for the students.

We are grateful to Sarah Armstrong for sharing her expertise and passion for writing with our students. Her visit has sparked creativity amongst our young learners, and we look forward to seeing the imaginative stories that will come from this experience.
