Spark their passion for learning.

As one of Brisbane and Redlands’ leading independent primary schools, Ormiston College is the ideal entry point to school life for your child.

Prep is the first entry point into the College, and our Junior School captures our village community feel as students move through two important phases of learning: The Early Years Phase (Prep to Year 3) and the Upper Junior Years Phase (Year 4 to Year 6).

During the Early Years, core skills and the foundations for future success are laid. Our Prep program is filled with the buzz and activity of all our busy little bodies exploring their environment, learning new skills and generally having fun.

Early Years

Starting in Prep

The Prep Curriculum Guidelines highlight that play is a natural activity through which children make meaning of the world around them. Play facilitates all development and is an invaluable means for initiating, promoting and sustaining learning. Our Prep children participate in a fun hands-on way with painting, drawing, construction, music, literacy, numeracy, role-playing, dance and movement. Children are encouraged to collaborate and negotiate, learn, solve problems and construct knowledge together. We believe in providing a setting that enriches these experiences, that is visually pleasing and intellectually stimulating both indoors and out. The light, airy rooms of Prep blend with the outdoor play area in the natural setting for which Ormiston College is renowned.

Early Years

Inspiration and empowerment

As students continue their journey into Years 1, 2 and 3 they are inspired and empowered through innovative learning strategies to explore their world and develop a deep love of lifelong learning. Priority is given to literacy and numeracy development because these are the foundations on which further learning is built.

English

During this phase of learning, the English curriculum engages students with listening, reading, viewing, speaking and writing activities for various purposes and contexts. It supports students to create and enjoy a range of literature. It presents explicit strategies for beginning reading and writing, spelling and expanding students’ vocabulary. The English curriculum expands students’ understanding of the conventions of spoken and written language use at home, at school, socially and in other contexts to promote skills and interest in language and its use and importance.
